Life Under Communism in Yugoslavia

14 09 2010

Charlotte Cushman has written a fantastic article about life under communism in Yugoslavia.  It’s scary stuff.

I found this article quite touching as my parents were immigrants themselves escaping civil war in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for a better life in Australia.  I’m so glad they made the move.  Eventually, my entire immediate family were forced out and lost virtually everything – a life time’s work.
Those who did stay did not fare well.  Just a few weeks ago I heard news that a distant, elderly relative of mine was brutally bashed to death in Zimbabwe, a fomerly prosperous country which according to one UN report now has the lowest life expectancy in the world.  Property rights are not protected and government induced inflation has crippled the country.
